Pombo brings off-reservation hearing to California

printer friendly
Rep. Richard Pombo (R-California), the chairman of the House Resources Committee, held a field hearing on off-reservation gaming in Sacramento, California, on Monday.

Pombo said he drafted a bill to limit off-reservation gaming in order to prevent attacks on tribal sovereignty. "There's a movement to basically throw it away," he said, The Contra Costa Times reported.

Pombo heard from people on both sides of the debate. But Don Arnold, chairman of the Scotts Valley Band of Pomo Indians, said landless tribes weren't represented.

Tribal leaders nationally are worried about potential changes to the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. They say the controversy over off-reservation gaming is largely coming from the media.
