Michigan tribe sees gaming as key to better future

printer friendly
The Match-e-be-nash-she-wish Band of Pottawatomi, also known as the Gun Lake Band, sees gaming as a way of building a better future for tribal members.

The tribe won recognition in 1999 through the Bureau of Indian Affairs process. A year later, tribal members voted to seek approval to acquire land for an initial reservation and a casino.

Six years alter, the tribe is finally moving forward with the plan after court challenges were rejected. John Shagonaby, a council member, says gaming will help provide housing, health care and other programs for the tribe.
