Town fights Mashantucket Tribe on slot machine case

printer friendly
The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut is embroiled in a legal battle with the town of Ledyard.

The town has been imposing property taxes on slot machines that are leased to the tribe. The Atlantic City Coin and Slot Service Co. paid nearly $11,000 in taxes in 2005.

In a lawsuit filed in state court, the tribe contends the tax is illegal under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. But in a motion to dismiss, the town says the tribe isn't the one being taxed.

The state's motion to intervene in the case is pending.
