Billions at stake in Seminole compact dispute

printer friendly
The Seminole Tribe of Florida continues to engage in Class III gaming despite a court ruling that struck down its compact.

The tribe agreed to share a portion of slot machine revenues with the state. But the payments -- $100 million this year alone -- are sitting in escrow because of the dispute.

Some Republican lawmakers say the state could have gotten more out of the deal. With the state in a budget crunch, however, some seem willing to come to a compromise.

Meanwhile, the tribe has continued to expand its Class III operation by adding more slot machines and table games to its casinos.
