BIA takes advantage of Internet shutdown

The Bureau of Indian Affairs has been disconnected from the Internet for more than two years but that hasn't stopped the agency from making improvements to its computer systems.
In fact, says BIA chief information officer Brian Burns, the shutdown has helped the BIA focus. "It made it easy for us to take the time and redesign the way we look at the Internet," he tells Federal Computer Week.
The BIA has revamped its entire information technology program, including hiring new management, changing how equipment and services are purchased and developing a security center that will protect the agency's computer systems.
