Shakopee Tribe working with city on trust land deal
Wednesday, July 14, 2004

The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community is working on a deal with the city of Prior Lake, Minnesota, to have 186 acres placed into trust.

The tribe wants to use the land for housing. In exchange for the city's support, the tribe would set aside 35 acres to build athletic fields for the city. The city would lease the fields for 99 years.

The parcel is part of 1,200 acres the tribe owns in fee in Prior Lake. The tribe pays about $100,000 a year in property taxes on the land.
