Fallout from Supreme Court ruling on Oneida Nation

The U.S. Supreme Court's recent decision in the Oneida Nation case is prompting schools and municipalities in New York to seek taxes from tribes.

The court held that the Oneida Nation could not "unilaterally" assert sovereignty over its land claim area. The decision could force the Oneidas, the Cayugas and the Seneca-Cayugas from Oklahoma to pay million in property taxes.

The Oneida Nation is considering its options in light of language in the court's ruling that said the tribe had to go through the land-into-trust process in order to claim tax exemptions on newly acquired properties.
