GOP Activist Grover Norquist: 'McCain hates me'
Monday, May 23, 2005

A Republican activist who took millions from gaming tribes says he is "getting dragged into" the Jack Abramoff scandal because Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona) holds a grudge against him.

Grover Norquist, the head of Americans for Tax Reform, campaigned for President Bush in the 2000 GOP primaries. Now he's being investigated by McCain, who lost the nomination to Bush.

"McCain hates me," Norquist tells The New York Times.

Norquist's group took at least $1.5 million from Abramoff's tribal clients. And he funneled $1.5 million in tribal funds to anti-gaming groups in Alabama and Texas.

McCain subpoenaed records of the group as part of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee's investigation into Abramoff. McCain said Norquist did not cooperate with the probe.
