Narragansett Tribe delays smoke shop reopening
Tuesday, May 24, 2005

The Narragansett Tribe of Rhode Island will delay the reopening of its smoke shop pending resolution of legal issues.

The tribe says it can sell tax-free tobacco products to Native Americans. The 1st Circuit Court of Appeals said the tribe has a right to do so and also suggested the tribe negotiate a compact with the state.

The state disagrees with the ruling and plans to appeal it to the U.S. Supreme Court. The tribe agreed to hold off on its plans until the case is resolved.
