Soboba Band signs law enforcement contract
Wednesday, June 29, 2005

The Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians signed a law enforcement contract with the Riverside County Sheriff's Department on Tuesday, said to be the first of its kind in California.

The tribe will pay about $387,000 a year for the county for police services. Two deputy sheriffs will be assigned to the reservation.

The Morongo Band of Mission Indians was negotiating with the county for an agreement but nothing has been signed yet. The tribe has an informal arrangement with the sheriff's department.

California has criminal and civil jurisdiction on reservations under Public Law 280. But tribe retain concurrent jurisdiction.
