Hayworth targeted for ties to Abramoff, DeLay
Monday, July 4, 2005

Democrats are targeting Rep. J.D. Hayworth (R-Arizona) for his ties to disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff and embattled House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Texas).

Hayworth, who is facing re-election in 2006, held fundraisers at luxury sports suites that were leased by Abramoff. But in campaign disclosure filings, he reimbursed the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians and the Chitimacha Tribe of Louisiana, two former clients of Abramoff's, for using the suites.

Hayworth also accepted $15,765 from DeLay's political action committee and contributed $1,000 to DeLay's legal defense fund, The Arizona Republic reports. Hayworth, the Republican co-chair of the Congressional Native American Caucus, has defended DeLay over DeLay's ties to Abramoff.
