The Washington Post interviewed Joe Garcia, the new president of the National Congress of American Indians, before he gave the State of Indian Nations address last Thursday. He discussed the Jack Abramoff scandal, stereotypes of tribes as "gaming tribes" and other issues affecting Indian Country.

"It's unfortunate that many Indian communities still have the poorest health conditions, highest rates of poverty, the worst housing conditions and lowest life expectancy than any segment of the population," he said. "But, then again, in other tribal communities we see the emerging economic growth."

Garcia also appeared on the C-SPAN program "Washington Journal" on Friday. He talked about moving on from the Abramoff scandal and said tribes shouldn't be singled out for their political activities. His segment, running about 25 minutes, can be viewed at rtsp://video.c-span.org/15days/wj020306_garcia.rm
