Shoshone-Bannock Tribes skeptical of Kempthorne

The chairman of the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes of Idaho doesn't think incoming Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne will protect sovereignty and the trust relationship.

"He's demonstrated to us that you can't hold him to his word," Chairman Blaine Edmo told The Idaho State Journal.

Edmo said Kempthorne, as governor of Idaho, "verbally agreed" to the tribe's water rights settlement twice "but then refused to sign it."

The tribe butted heads with Kempthorne on gaming, taxation and natural resources issues. The tribe raised numerous objections to a deal Kempthorne signed with the Nez Perce Tribe but later dropped the objections.

The Senate, by a voice vote, unanimously confirmed Kempthorne on Friday.
