County to stop patrolling Soboba Reservation
Monday, August 21, 2006
The sheriff's department in Riverside County, California, will no longer patrol the Soboba Reservation after the Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians canceled a law enforcement contract.
The agreement was signed in summer 2005. County officers said they have noticed a drop in crime and improved relations with tribal members since then.
The tribe hasn't given a reason for canceling the contract. The tribe was paying about $400,000 to pay for the county's services.
California falls under Public Law 280, which granted civil and criminal jurisdiction on reservations to the state.
