House hearing on Lumbee, Virginia recognition
Monday, April 2, 2007

The House Natural Resources Committee has scheduled an April 18 hearing on legislative recognition for the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina and six Virginia tribes.

H.R.65 would repeal a termination-era law that identified the Lumbees as Indian but denied them treatment as a recognized tribe.

H.R.1294 would extend recognition to the Chickahominy Indian Tribe, the Chickahominy Indian Tribe-Eastern Division, the Upper Mattaponi Tribe, the Rappahannock Tribe, Inc., the Monacan Indian Nation, and the Nansemond Indian Tribe.

The hearing is the committee's first on recognition since the start of the 110th Congress.
