Griles' seat on federal commission goes unfilled
Monday, April 9, 2007

The Jamestown 400th Commemoration Commission won't appoint someone to replace former deputy Interior secretary J. Steven Griles, who pleaded guilty for his role in the Jack Abramoff scandal.

Griles, a resident of Virginia, was helping plan events for the 400th anniversary of the first major English settlement. Steve Adkins, the chief of the Chickahominy Tribe and another commission member, said he enjoyed working with Griles.

Griles is the 10th person to plead guilty or to be found guilty in connection with the scandal. The Department of Justice says its investigation is ongoing, with Italia Federici, a former girlfriend of Griles, the latest target.
