Tribal views on 'Fighting Sioux' at issue in case

The University of North Dakota is being accused of misrepresenting the Spirit Lake Nation's views on the school's "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo.

In defense of its mascot, UND submitted a resolution passed by the tribe that states "as long as something positive comes from this controversy, (the tribe is) not opposed to keeping the 'Sioux' name and present logo at UND." The school says the resolution means the tribe supports the nickname and logo.

Spirit Lake Chairwoman Myra Pearson, however, said the tribe neither supports or opposes the mascot. Other Sioux tribes have passed resolutions against the nickname and logo.

UND is suing the NCAA in order to keep using the "Sioux" symbols. NCAA filed a motion in the case to take into account tribal views on the mascot.
