Utah Navajos seek extension for state trust fund
Tuesday, December 4, 2007

Utah Navajos are seeking a two-year extension for the state's management of their trust funds.

In 1933, Congress delegated trustee duties to the state to manage royalties from oil and gas drilling in San Juan County. The state wants to relinquish its role in 2008.

But Utah Navajos support an extension because they aren't sure Congress can pass a new law in time. The Utah Dineh Committee said two years will allow for an adequate transition to a new managing entity for their funds. The state is proposing the Navajo Nation take over [Press Release].

The state still faces a lawsuit to account for $62 million in Navajo trust funds from 1955 to 1991.
