North Dakota board to discuss 'Fighting Sioux'
Thursday, December 13, 2007

The state Board of Higher Education will meet in person on December 20 to discuss the University of North Dakota's "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo."

The meeting was supposed to be held be telephone but board president John Paulsen wants a face-to-face-meeting with chancellor William Goetz to discuss the issue. Paulsen has suggested that the nickname and logo might be retired early due to tribal opposition.

A settlement gives UND three years to gain tribal support. But the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe already passed a resolution against the name and logo.

Gov. John Hoeven (R) says the school should not rush to make a decision. He urged officials to negotiate with tribes.
