When Kevin Gover took control of the National Museum of the American Indian last month, his arrival was soon overshadowed by controversy over spending by his predecessor.

Gover, a member of the Pawnee Tribe of Oklahoma, tells The New York Times the museum's image "took a little hit." But he doesn't it will have long-term impact.

"I worry about that in connection with the tribes. But in a very few months I think very few people will remember this," Gover says.

West, a members of the Cheyenne-Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma, spent more than $250,000 on travel in four years. He commissioned a $48,500 portrait and the museum spent $30,585 on an eight-minute DVD biography for him.
