Thousands denied residential school payments

The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations says more than 2,300 people in the province have been denied a share of the $1.9 billion residential school settlement.

Leon Manitopyes is one of them. He said his application was rejected even though his brother -- who attended the same school -- received his payment.

"Here I am, right here. This is my brother Kenny," Manitopyes said, pointing a picture of the two at a school on the Muskowekwan First Nation, CBC News reported. "He was compensated. How come I wasn't compensated?"

About 78,000 former students are eligible for payments. As many as 21,000 applications are still being processed, CBC reported.
