Clinton and Obama back Lumbee recognition

As North Carolina votes in the Democratic presidential primary, Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-New York) and Sen. Barack Obama (D-Illinois) are affirming their support for recognition of the Lumbee Tribe.

With over 40,000 member, the Lumbees are the largest tribe east of the Mississippi. A termination-era law bars them from being treated as an Indian tribe and from following the federal recognition process.

Clinton and Obama both say they will work to get the tribe recognized. Neither of them, however, have signed onto S.333, a bill to recognize the tribe.
