Lac du Flambeau protesters plead not guilty

Ten members of the
Lac du Flambeau Band of
Lake Superior Chippewa of Wisconsin entered not guilty pleas in connection with a protest against tribal leaders.
The protesters occupied tribal headquarters for about 13 hours on March 26. The group, known as the Ginews, which means eagle in Ojibwe, are upset with the way tribal leaders have handled financial and other matters.
The ten were arrested and charged with various misdemeanors in state court. Wisconsin is a Public Law 280 state.
The judge plans to hold the next hearing in the case on the reservation to make it easier for the defendants and their supporters to attend proceedings.
