Tuesday, July 1, 2008

The Rosebud Sioux Tribe of South Dakota is hosting a two-day "Sacredness of Life" summit to discuss suicide prevention.

So far this year, six people on the reservation have committed suicide. Four were men ages 20 to 24 and the other two were women between the ages of 25 and 44.

That comes to a suicide rate of 48 per 100,000, or more than four times the national average of 11 per 100,000.

The Indian Health Service also reported 208 suicide attempts or suicide-related incidents so far this year.
