Cherokee Nation set for takeover of IHS hospital

The
Cherokee Nation is scheduled to assume operations of the
W.W.
Hastings Indian Hospital in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, on October 1.
The tribe will take over the facility from the
Indian Health Service. Final approval was given by the tribal council yesterday.
"This is an exciting opportunity for not only Cherokees, but for all Native Americans who use this hospital," Chief Chad Smith said in a
statement. "By the council and administration working together, we can now begin to build the best health care system in northeastern Oklahoma."
The tribe envisions an "Indian Mayo Clinic" at the site. Long-term plans call for separate outpatient clinic, a new outpatient surgery center, a new facility for doctors' offices, a new medical support building and a new center for future programs.
