Wisconsin tribes seek green friendly housing

The
University of Wisconsin-Madison is working with three tribes to develop environmentally-friendly housing.
The
St. Croix Chippewa, the
Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Superior Ojibwa and the
Mole Lake Sokaogon Chippewa want affordable, green and family-friendly homes. Most tribal families are extended so the homes need to be large enough to handle multiple generations.
"We want to push green codes or green principles in our design," Duane Emery, the director of community development and housing for the St. Croix Chippewa, told The Madison Capital Times. "As Native Americans, we need to do this."
The first project is gong up on the St. Croix Reservation. It consists of two 1,400-square-foot houses.
The university is providing training so the other two tribes can carry out similar work for their members.
