Eight Native people have been shot by police in the last 10 months in Canada, pointing to the need for a public inquiry, the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations said on Thursday.
Five of the shooting incidents were fatal. "We have to ask, 'What about our security and our safety?' when these situations are occurring with such frequency," FSIN Chief Lawrence Joseph said at a press conference, according to news reports.
The latest incident occurred this week, when a man from the Clearwater River Dene First Nation in Saskatchewan was shot and killed in an altercation with
Royal
Canadian Mounted Police. Tribal leaders said they will be closely watching the case to determine if excessive force was used.
