Senate Indian Affairs Committee field hearing
Monday, June 29, 2009

The Senate Indian Affairs Committee will hold a field hearing on Wednesday, July 1, to discuss law enforcement on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs started Operation Dakota Peacekeeper in response to high crime rates on the reservation. At one point, the BIA sent 37 officers to the reservation.

According to Sen. John Thune (R-South Dakota), the BIA has failed to maintain its presence on the reservation. Last week, he said the number of officers has dropped to 13, the same number prior to Operation Dakota Peacekeeper.

The field hearing takes place at 9am at the Sitting Bull College in Fort Yates, North Dakota. There will not be an archived webcast.
