Arguments set for appeal of Cayuga land claim
Wednesday, February 25, 2004

The 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals will hear arguments March 31 in the Cayuga land claim.

A federal judge in New York awarded the tribe $247.9 million for 64,000 acres of stolen land. The payment has been stayed pending the appeal.

The Cayuga Nation of New York and the Seneca-Cayuga Tribe of Oklahoma say the award is not enough. Their calculations range to the billions.

The state of New York, two counties and landowners are challenging the land claim altogether. They claim the tribe gave up its rights.

The court will hear arguments in Manhattan.
