McCain demands documents from lobbyist, PR exec
Monday, April 12, 2004

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) has given Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff an April 19 deadline to turn over documents related to his work for four tribes. Public relations executive Michael Scanlon was also told to turn over documents.

The Lake Charles American Press quoted letters McCain sent to Abramoff and Scanlon. McCain asked Abramoff for details of his lobbying contracts with the tribes and any payments the tribes may have made to Scanlon. McCain wants similar information from Scanlon.

Four tribes paid Abramoff and Scanlon at least $45 million for lobbying and public relations work. Abramoff has since left the lobbying firm of Greenberg Traurig. Scanlon was not directly affiliated with the firm.

McCain is investigating the high fees the tribes paid. The Senate Committee on Indian Affairs is expected to hold hearings on the subject later this spring or in the summer.
