Judge to decide fate of Seneca-Cayuga Tribe's land
Tuesday, September 9, 2003

A federal judge in New York said he will decide whether land owned by the Seneca-Cayuga Tribe of Oklahoma is Indian Country.

The tribe purchased 229 acres of ancestral territory in New York and plans to open a Class II bingo facility there. The casino is on hold pending resolution of the legal status of the land.

Relying on similar cases, the tribe believes the land is Indian Country. The land is within the tribe's claim area that was affirmed by a federal court.
