Eastern Cherokee Tribe afraid of Lumbee recognition
Tuesday, November 4, 2003

The Eastern Cherokee Tribe of North Carolina is lobbying against federal recognition of the Lumbee Tribe "like you would not believe," a professor says.

Brett Riggs of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill says the Eastern Cherokees are afraid of losing federal funds and gambling revenues if the Lumbees are recognized. The Eastern Cherokees are the only federally recognized tribes in the state.

A bill to recognize the Lumbees is heading to the Senate floor. The Eastern Cherokees support a rival bill that would make the tribe go through the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

The House has not held a hearing on the Lumbee recognition.
