Shakopee Tribe donates $141K for holiday season
Tuesday, December 9, 2003

The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community of Minnesota has made $141,800 in donations for the holiday season. Most of the money is going to organizations that help Indian families and children.

A total of 29 social service organizations in the Twin Cities received money for food, clothing, toys and other items. "We are grateful for the opportunity to help others especially during the holidays," said chairman Stanley Crooks.

The largest amount given to one organization was $20,000 to the CAP Agency serving three counties in Minnesota. The money will fund two holiday programs that raise food, cash and other items for needy families.

Other donations include: $10,000 to the Crow Creek Sioux Tribe of South Dakota for gifts for children; $8,000 to the Minnesota Department of Indian Work; $8,000 to the Minneapolis American Indian Center; and numerous donations to Indian organizations in the Twin cities area.

The Black Hills American Indian Center of Rapid City, South Dakota; Indian Youth of America of Iowa City, Iowa; Native Hope of Sisseton, South Dakota; and the St. Labre Indian School of Ashland, Montana, also received holiday donations.

Over the past six year, the tribe has donated more than $31.5 million to tribes and non-profits.
