Supporters of Lumbee recognition bill expect fight

Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-N.C.) is expecting "a tough fight" on a bill to extend full federal recognition to the Lumbee Tribe.
Dole sought unanimous consent for the bill last week. But some senators objected, her spokesperson said. It won't be taken up until February 2004 at the earliest.
The House has yet to take up a companion bill offered by Rep. Mike McIntyre (D-N.C.). A rival bill by Rep. Charles Taylor (R-N.C.), an ally of the Eastern Cherokee Tribe, would require the Lumbees to seek recognition through the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The Lumbees are currently prohibited from doing so.
